The Memorial..

It should come as no surprise to the regular followers of this blog when I say that I believe President Obama is making a great mistake by sending more troops to Afghanistan. I don’t know what he has been told at the war meetings, but I hope I can never agree with his decision.

However, as it appears that war will continue to drag on (some Senator mentioned that 5 more years is as long as American will tolerate), perhaps we need to start to think how we will remember this conflict. What kind of Memorial is going to be built in Washington to grieve for the loss of life sustained over these years?

Will we build something like the Korean War Memorial? It would be appropriate, it was also an American War fought in some far away country that majority of the population knew nothing about until the prospect of war came up.

Or will it be more like the Vietnam War Memorial? The Afghanistan/Iraq conflict is fast approaching the Vietnam War in terms of time. We are also fighting an enemy that is very different from our culture, and is fighting for what they believe is a just cause. But then again, the casualty count is much lower in the more recent conflict.

Or perhaps our memorial will more resemble the latest of a long line of Memorials built because of wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. History shows that we really are doing the same exact thing the Russians tried to do and failed in Afghanistan. But then again, Americans can do what Russians couldn’t.. like go to the Moon. Right?

  • This war will be remembered for what it did to the US. Just like the last big war they were in is remembered for what it did to the USSR.

We cannot continue on the path we've chosen. People might think an American collapse is farfetched, but if you'd told someone in 1986 that the USSR only had 5 years left, you'd have been locked up in the nearest mental health facility.

There is something I need to say about this blog and its writer(s). It really goes beyond politics.

That is don't give up. What you have to say I seldom agree with in whole, but I appreciate what you write. There is an honesty here that overwhelming, and you express true feelings.

I want you to know I am envious of you; you believed strongly in your candidate and what he said he stood for. For this entire last election cycle, I could never once say I believed in John McCain. For the first time in my life I found I was stuck between a rock and a hard place where my beliefs and values were going to go unnoticed by both candidates.

Please do not take this as criticism. It is not intended to be. I am a conservative and a blogger, but the way I was able to move forward was through a more comedic approach to politics. I admit that for the first time in my life politics has just become a game to me, rather than anything I can believe in.

I respect your passion, and through your postings see "Change" maybe not in the country as promised but in you. I sense a frustration and think I understand it. You did nothing wrong, you believed in someone and his promises and that's not a bad thing, ever. We all should try to believe in each other; that would make the world a better place than any empty treaty or notion that may get one person more votes than another.

You have talent, and a great blog. Please use both. Your values do not have to change even if you feel let down by the administration. Heck, I feel let down. I expected a war to end, not to escalate. I believed Obama when he said he had a plan.

The greatest truth about America is that we are the ones who can change it for the better. We can't get lazy and expect someone else to do it for us. No matter if you reach one person or a million with your blog, you stand the chance of changing a heart, which is the only real change out there that means anything.

My words to you are do not give up, and please share with your readers what you are going through. Get active and stay that way because I and others value what you have said and are awaiting what comes next.

Your are an idealist, and you must never apologize for that. Life has a way of altering how we see things, and that is ok. Just share it, because I know you are not alone, and the more people who can express how they feel the more human we can make these dark times.

Maybe we can't fix the problems, but maybe we can. Maybe you can. Don't give up on this.

  • Russia planted bombs in children's toys. You're never going to win a war when you use tactics like that.

    5 more years??? For what?

I don't like this war one bit. I see young men going to a foreign country with no firm enemy, objectives or support and they are getting killed.

I agree with you - when are we going to start remembering these people and how? Are we not meant to have learned from our mistakes?
